The ECCC Co-Prosecutors have appealed the Trial Chamber’s second attempt to sever the Case 002 indictment into consecutive trials, arguing forcefully that crimes committed at the S-21 Security Center must be included in the first, and likely only, trial of surviving senior Khmer Rouge leaders. The Trial Chamber has ruled on several contested matters related to Civil Party testimony in Case 002/01 at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, deciding that Civil Parties may offer final statements of suffering related to the entirety of the Khmer Rouge period and that the Chamber will use the same approach for evaluating the weight and probative value of both Civil Party and witness evidence. Anne Heindel explores the ruling.
